Iowa One Call
Iowa One Call, a statewide program providing contractors, homeowners, and others with a single toll free number to call for locating and marking underground facilities. The number to call anytime is 1-800-292-8989 or visit their website www.iowaonecall.com when excavating, digging or trenching.
Iowa law states that a call to Iowa One Call must be done at least 48 hours in advance of the planned digging in order to minimize the risk of damaging any type of underground facilities (electric, gas, telecommunications, cable television, water and sewer). This law is designed to protect both the digger and the utility, so make the telephone call and avoid an accident.
This service is free, and so is the telephone call. The Iowa One Call Center has operators standing by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week monitoring the calls and notifying utilities if there is an underground line in the area where digging is to take place.
The only two exceptions when a call to Iowa One Call is NOT required:
- A garden that is worked in year after year and it is replanting season. A NEW garden plot however, would require a call to Iowa One Call.
- Farmers doing their day to day operations such as plowing, cultivating, planting and harvesting NOT expecting to go deeper than 15 inches into the soil.
Peak periods when call volumes are the highest, is on Monday from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
